Cold temperatures dominated the continental U.S., except Florida, during the week of December 8-14. The Northern Plains and Intermountain West saw temperatures 20 degrees below normal for the week. At the peak of the cold wave on December 9, two-thirds of the continental U.S. was under some sort of snow cover. Snow, sleet, and ice hit many parts of the Southern Plains through Ohio Valley causing major transportation problems, but some places in Florida set record high temperatures.
